Save the Earth

Everyday, more damage is done to the Earth than we think. Most of this harm is caused by human activity. Many things we do are making the Earth weaker by the minute. Although it seems impossible help, there are many things that we can do to make a difference.

Deforestation

Deforestation is when people cut down trees to obtain wood or to create flat land to build on. Doing this puts the lives of many animals at risk. They lose their homes and start to die out. This also effects the enivironment's ecosystem. If too many animals die, the other aniamls will have nothing to eat and they will starve. There is another major problem with deforestation. Trees and plants take in the carbon dioxide that we breathe out. Then, they release oxygen. If we keep chopping down trees, we will lose our source of clean air.

Global Warming

Global warming, or climate change, is the gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide. Global warming effects not only the environment, but the creatures living in it. Climate change is faster and more severe in the Arctic than in most of the world. The ice sheet are quickly melting making it nearly impossible for arctic animals, such as polar bears, to hunt and find food. Polor bears are endangered and if global warming keeps melting the glaciars, they may go extinct.

Pollution

There are many different types of polution which include land, water, and air polution.

Oil Spills

An oil spill occurs when a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon is released into a body of water. This harmful chemical negativley affects aquatic wildlife and eventually kills the animals living in the water. It most commonly happens in water, but it could also happen on land. Oil spills also affect people. The oil pollutes the water we drink making it unsafe to consume.

Littering

When people litter, they leave behind trash and other unwanted items. Some trash takes a while to decompose. This is harmful to animals and can kill them. They could get caught in or choke on fishing hooks, nets, and/or bottle caps. They could also get deep wounds and cuts by steping on broken pieces of glass and/or plastic bottles.

Air Pollution

Air pollution occurs when harmful substances including particulates and biological molecules are introduced into Earth's atmosphere. These substances contaminate the air making it unsafe to breathe. Air pollution can be caused by the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, natural gas, and gasoline to produce electricity and power our vehicles. This can also harm the environment and the animals and plants living in it.

How Can We Help

We can help save the Earth in many different ways, like by burning less fossil fuels. For example, instead of riding a car to school, you can walk or ride a bike. Another alternative would be to car pool or ride the bus. That way, we conserve more natural resources and release less harmful substances into the air. We could also pick up after ourselves and turn of the running water when it is not being used. If we all do our part, we can give our planet a second chance.
